Mcdonald s Popular Food Chain - 1514 Words
Have you been to McDonaldââ¬â¢s lately? Every day, close to one in four Americans eat fast food, with McDonaldââ¬â¢s serving close to seventy million people daily (Sorensen). They are a growing, popular food chain, and with that comes many positive and negative effects. McDonaldââ¬â¢s has created many new jobs which has helped to decrease Americaââ¬â¢s unemployment rate, they provide a low cost meal for those who can afford nothing else, and they also participate in raising money for charities. Yes, all these things are great; however, McDonaldââ¬â¢s, along with other fast food restaurants, are the leading cause of rising obesity rates (Owens 31, 33). This year was also the year of expansion for McDonaldââ¬â¢s. Ray Kroc, franchiser of McDonaldââ¬â¢s, opened eighteen new restaurants (Gilbert 8). Now there are more than thirty-five thousand restaurants worldwide and around fourteen thousand, three hundred McDonaldââ¬â¢s in America alone (Statista). Currently, so many people are without jobs. In 2013, 10.4 million people were unemployed (Philadelphia Daily News). Some of these people are poor and homeless while others live off the American people, through the government. McDonaldââ¬â¢s gives many opportunities to those who canââ¬â¢t afford education, donââ¬â¢t have a home, or are simply looking for a little extra cash. McDonaldââ¬â¢s opens new restaurants at rate of roughly about 2000 new restaurants per year (Pirello). Just looking at that number, think about how many new employees they are hiring each year. In the United States alone, McDonaldââ¬â¢s hires close to one million workers each year (Lubin). This makes the McDonaldââ¬â¢s corporation number three in America for having the most minimum wage employees, behin d Wal-Mart and Yum! Brands, which owns companies such as Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut (Hickey, Hess). McDonaldââ¬â¢s does not only provide jobs for those who need them, but they also provide a low-cost meal for those who cannot afford anything else. They have a dollar menu, which consists of twenty-six items that cost one
